Throughout the turmoil of Central America's civil wars in the
1980s and '90s, archaeologist Payson Sheets, worked to unearth an
extraordinarily well-preserved 1,400-year-old Maya village. A
scalding blanket of ash erupted from the Loma Caldera volcanic vent
around AD 630, freezing the farming village of Ceren in time.
Located in today's El Salvador, Ceren has become known as the
"Pompeii of the Americas." Sheets and his teams uncovered evidence
of everyday life in the village, including artifacts showing that
the Maya were likely in the middle of a harvest feast when the
explosion occurred. Unlike Pompeii, however, no bodies have been
found. Sheets, a professor at the University of Colorado at
Boulder, will discuss his life's work in Ceren, now deemed a UN
World Heritage Site.

Did you know that the eruption of Mount Vesuvius wasn't the only
natural disaster to strike ancient Pompeii? The unlucky city
was hit by an earthquake in AD 62, 17 years before the big
eruption. Today, modern science helps us be better prepared for
catastrophic geological events. Plate tectonics describes
Earth's crust as being made of large semirigid plates,
which wander and jostle and affect lives in many ways. Earth
Sciences research associate Bob Raynolds will discuss how we
plate riders have learned to both cope with and capitalize
on the motion of these plates.
