For Peter and Cathy Dea, science is a lifelong passion.
As a geologist, Peter Dea made many visits to the Denver Museum
of Nature & Science before joining the corporate giving
committee in the late 90s. The committee was chaired by Peter's
good friend, John Hickenlooper.
"John's passion and excitement had a pretty powerful influence
on my role in the Museum," Peter said.
Now a Museum trustee, Peter is dedicated to providing more
hands-on, curiosity-charging ways for both children and adults to
discover science. He believes the Denver Museum of Nature &
Science presents many opportunities for such engagement.
"It is just full of fun and invigorating ways to really engross
oneself and one's family with science and nature," Peter said.
Cathy Dea agreed, recalling trips to the Museum with her
children. "It is an incredible place to learn about so many things,
from rocks to dinosaurs to health, from the diorama halls to the
planetarium," Cathy said.
Recently, Peter and Cathy had the opportunity to help with
Museum's fossil excavation near Snowmass Village, Colorado. While
digging with the Museum team and President George Sparks, Cathy
helped uncover the skull of an Ice Age bison and shared in the
excitement of eating actual seeds from the Ice Age! She recalls the
discovery with great emotion.
"As we were uncovering her, it was as if she said 'you found us
and now you need to share us.' And that changed my life. I mean, to
find something that beautiful and then to be able to share it with
everybody is just incredible," Cathy said.
Peter believes that ambitious field efforts and engaging
exhibitions make the Museum one of the top science museums in the
United States. He says that the Museum's recent attendance records
and growing membership of over 58,000 households are a testament to
the institutions excellence.
"It's pretty hard not to give to the Museum. It is probably the
best institution for kids and adults and people of all kinds of
socioeconomic statuses to come and enjoy what we have in this
region," Peter said, "We know our financial contributions make a
positive and lasting impact on the community."
