Family-Friendly Highlights

Genghis Khan features interactive components to help illustrate the story of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire for younger visitors. The following activities are ideal for families with children:

  • Walk through a life-size ger, the traditional nomadic dwelling. See and touch pottery, furniture, clothing, and more.
  • Play traditional nomadic children’s games. Try to win at knucklebone, a dice-like game historically played with real sheep bones.
  • See weaponry demonstrations. Learn the engineering behind the trebuchet weapon—similar to a giant catapult—and how it can be enhanced for better distance, accuracy, or power.
  • Experience live cultural performances. Watch Mongolian singers and musicians.
  • Construct and decorate a Mongolian-style hat to take home. Use stamps with traditional Mongolian patterns and learn about their symbolism.
  • Use computer touch screens throughout the exhibition to follow various characters from Genghis Khan’s empire and learn about their lives in 13th-century Mongolia.
