Join the Earth Sciences volunteer team as a Digital Technician Assistant. Use cutting edge technology and software to visualize fossil dinosaurs, crocodiles, and mammals like never before! We are working to establish a new Digital Paleontology Lab that will employ an innovative approach to studying and analyzing fossils. Using CT datasets (like the ones used in clinical medicine), we will investigate fossil materials in a non-destructive way that also provides greater insight into hidden anatomical details of these ancient creatures. With this technology, we can create interactive 3-dimensional models that allow us to envision distinct bones within a model separately or as an articulated specimen, isolate specific bones for further analysis, or open the model for an inside view. Imagine creating a 3D model of a fossil skull and opening it up to view the braincase from the inside out! This new method allows us to view deep, hidden structures never seen before - such as structures of the inner ear that contributes to hearing and balance or the pathways of cranial nerves within the skull. Learn new skills and contribute to the emerging field of digital paleontology as we uncover new anatomical details about our fossil specimens.
Strong computer skills, ability to take direction and to problem solve, enjoy working independently on projects, excellent attention to detail, ability to perform repetitive and time-consuming tasks with care, ability to work in a collaborative environment with Earth Sciences staff, patience and cheerful disposition.
On-the-job training and instruction will be provided by digital technician, with occasional oversight of individual research projects by vertebrate paleontology curators. No previous experience with fossils necessary.
