Entomology Collections Assistant

Do you love bugs? The Zoology Department is looking for volunteers to provide support to the insect collections including a vast beetle collection, with a focus on learning insect preparation techniques, especially pinning.  Tasks also include the identification of specimens to the species level. Cataloging and/or databasing of specimens and assisting with outreach activities.

 

Required Skills

Biology, entomology experiences helpful. Solid attention to detail. Experience handling specimens and steady hands a must! Ability to read and understand taxonomic literature and publications. Basic familiarity of field collection methods.

 

Training

Zoology staff will train

 

Schedule

Shifts available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Minimum one four hour shift per week required.

 

Age Requirements

Available to individual applicants 18 or older

Please remember that volunteer placement is a selective process and not all applicants are accepted into the program. The Museum reserves the right to place volunteers in the area staff feels is best suited to the applicant's skills and the needs of the Museum. A minimum commitment of one year is required for most volunteer positions.
