Our Volunteer Application Process

After reviewing our current volunteer opportunities, there are a series of steps that all volunteer applicants must complete before they can begin to volunteer. Please be aware the entire process takes several weeks to complete.

Select the Appropriate Application


Adult Application – Applicants who are 18 and older should complete this application.

Teen Application – Teens ages 14 – 17 who wish to volunteer independently (without a parent or guardian) should complete this application. Teens may volunteer in Expedition Health, Prehistoric Journey, Space Odyssey, and the Museum Ambassador Program. Applicants must be able to volunteer for a minimum of 20 shifts within one year.

Family Application – Adults who would like to volunteer alongside youth in their family (ages 6 – 13) should complete this application. (By law, youth cannot complete their own application; it must be done by the parent or guardian who will be volunteering with them.) 

Comunidad Student Scientist (CSS) Program – High school students (16 years or older) interested in exploring science related careers.

Ready on Arrival Adult Application - Available to individual applicants 14 years of age or older. Younger applicants will be considered with family groups.

Teen 2019 Discovery Zone and Children's Programs Application -

  • Applicants must be at least 14 years old by May 31, 2019
  • Applicants must be available for an interview at the Museum
  • Applicants must enjoy the company of children
  • Applicants must be team players who are friendly, flexible, patient, and demonstrate respect for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities


At the bottom of the application you will be prompted to create an account using a valid email address. You will need to check your email at this point and click the link to verify your address. You will then be able to complete the rest of your application. If you get an alert indicating your email address is already in use, email [email protected] and the administrator will reactivate your account. Please use, “Need Application Assistance” in the subject line.

Sign Up for and Attend an Interview Session



Once your application has been processed, you will be sent email instructions for how to sign up for an interview. During the interview, you’ll have the opportunity to share your skills, tell us your positions of interest, and indicate when you are available to volunteer.  

Shortly after your interview, you will receive notification if you have been selected for a volunteer position. Please remember that volunteer placement is a selective process and not all applicants are accepted into the program. The Museum reserves the right to place volunteers in the area staff feels is best suited to the applicant's skills and the needs of the Museum. A minimum commitment of one year is required for all volunteer positions. Those who are offered a position will then be given instructions on how to sign up for New Volunteer Orientation.

Sign Up for and Attend New Volunteer Orientation



All new volunteers are required to attend New Volunteer Orientation (NVO). Here, you can expect to learn about topics such as the Museum’s history, emergency procedures, departmental organization, financials, and volunteer benefits. You will receive your badge and take part in a specialized Museum tour during this orientation.

Begin Volunteering!



Each volunteer position has a specific training/orientation plan to prepare you for your new role. Your supervisor, team leader, or a member of the Volunteer Engagement Team will guide this process and let you know what comes next. Welcome to the Museum!
