A New Film from the Museum Archives: Hawaiian Album

See Hawaii and its natural splendor through the eyes of former Museum director Dr. Alfred M. Bailey. During his career, Bailey conducted fieldwork around the world, documenting it through journals, photographs, and moving images. In 1961, Bailey presented “Hawaiian Album” to an enthusiastic audience during his popular Film Lecture Series. In those days, Bailey spoke live to the audience with the silent film projected on screen. The Image Archives Department has re-created the moment with the help of Cinema Lab by taking Bailey’s film and audio to produce a digital motion picture. The film covers Bailey’s travels through the Hawaiian Chain, with a particular focus on birds. This special premiere will be hosted by René Payne, Museum image archivist, and Robert David of Cinema Lab, as they discuss film preservation and the digitization process.
