Learn how science has influenced art through the ages and make a science-inspired work of your own. Explore the Konovalenko: Gem Carvings of Russian Folk Life exhibit and learn about the geology and artistry behind each of the pieces. 

 

At 7:00 or 8:00:

Learn about the life of artist Vasily Konovalenko, his inspiration for the Gem Carvings of Russian Folk Life, and how the carvings were constructed with Steve Nash, curator of archaeology

 

Throughout the evening:

  • Meet guest artists and project designers Monica & Tyler Aiello and learn how science influences their work
  • Get inspired by Konovalenko’s gem carvings, then make your own crystal figure
  • Create a polyhedron paper sculpture that doubles as a nightlight
  • Examine colorful gems and minerals that relate to Konovalenko’s incredible works
  • Explore the Konovalenko: Gem Carvings of Russian Folk Life exhibit, recently featured on NPR's All Things Considered, and don't miss Martin Luther King in Sapphire, at the Museum on temporary display
