Outdoor enthusiasts and environmental educators sign up here! WEBS volunteers lead 3rd grade Denver Public School students on a day of environmental discovery about Colorado ecology. Half the day is spent exploring nature in the mountains near Genessee Park and the other half of the day is spent in the Museum touring the dioramas.
Skills and Abilities: Applicant will need the stamina and enthusiasm necessary to teach eight year olds for up to six hours. Applicant will also need strong communication skills, knowledge of plants and animals which pertain to Colorado ecology -- especially foothills and mountain ecology -- plus patience and a sense of humor. Must be familiar with nature interpretation techniques using inquiry method (not lecture). Experience working with elementary age students is a strong plus.
Training: On-the-job shadowing with experienced volunteer, formal content training, and training on handling Museum specimens and collections.
Schedule: Tuesdays only; 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Half-day shifts are also available at the Museum only, from 8:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m.– 3:30 p.m.
Minimum Commitment: Nine months (one school year), with at least one Tuesday per month. Attendance at 2 – 3 training sessions per school year is also required.
