Birding Trip: Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas

Take your birding hobby to the next level and join Adult Programs Department Associate Norm Lewis for a week in a place you will not soon forget!

The lower Rio Grande Valley is internationally recognized as one of the premier birding areas in North America, and like southeast Arizona, includes the northernmost ranges of many birds which can be seen few places north of the Mexican border.  The birding sites include: Santa Ana and Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuges, Bentsen-Rio Grande and Falcon State Parks, South Padre Island, the “Birder Camp” at Salineño, Sabal Palm Grove, and others.

The Valley encompasses approximately one hundred twenty miles, from Falcon Dam to the Gulf of Mexico.  Shorebirds and terns are abundant around the beaches and lagoons, songbirds abound in the riparian forest and thorn scrub, three kingfishers course the rivers and lakes, and raptors seem to be everywhere – including the much-sought-after Aplomado Falcon.

For expert or beginning birders alike, this is a place to enhance your bird watching life list.  Imagine adding these rare sightings: Crimson-collared Grosbeak, Brown Jay, Red-billed Pigeon, Painted Bunting, Clay-colored Robin, Blue Bunting, and White-collared Seedeater. Don’t miss it!
