Take an excursion to Alaska to view springtime nesting colonies of sea birds, precariously perched on coastal cliffs. Nearby, Seward Peninsula hosts migratory birds (some from as far away as South Africa) that make their brief summer nests in the treeless tundra.
Remember squab? So many passenger pigeons were killed for this restaurant delicacy in the early 1900s that the species vanished. The California condor’s story is happier: 183 of these majestic giants still survive in an intensive restoration program. The scenes in this exhibition include these and other extinct or endangered bird species.
