Featuring the research of Curator of Archaeology, Steven Holen, this exhibit features mammoth bone artifacts, broken mammoth bones, and photographs/illustrations from two mammoth sites that Holen has excavated recently.
The fracture patterns and bone tools suggest that humans were in North America more than 10,000 years before the presently accepted 11,000 years ago. The exhibit also features photographs from an experiment conducted in Africa last summer where Holen fractured and flaked a mammoth femur to reproduce the fracture patterns found on the 20,000-year-old mammoth bones. A video of the elephant bone experiment is also featured.
