NASA’s newest mission to Mars is about to begin! On May 25, the Phoenix Mars Lander will arrive on the Red Planet to begin its work. This ingenious robot will dig beneath the frigid Martian landscape, looking for evidence of past and present water in the planet’s northern polar region. Colorado has a special connection to this ambitious mission—the Phoenix Mars Lander was built by Lockheed Martin in Jefferson County.
On May 25, come to the Museum for a special event, Phoenix on Mars—Live! Together, we’ll watch the live NASA telecast of the landing, including the suspenseful moments as mission control waits for the first signals from Phoenix indicating that the landing was a success. Also, find out what scientists are hoping to learn about the Red Planet from this mission. Your host for the evening is space science curator Steve Lee, PhD, an expert on Mars who has been studying the planet for his entire career. Snacks will be available while you’re waiting for the ground-breaking photos. The Space Odyssey exhibition will also be open. Ticket-holders are welcome to come and go during the landing event.
