Architectural design for the new west atrium is by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, LLP (HHPA). Established in 1967, HHPA is an award-winning architecture, planning and interior design firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Highly respected for some of the country’s most innovative architecture, HHPA is well known for its design of buildings for public use including the recent renovation to Radio City Music Hall and The Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek. The associate architect on the project is HLM Design. HLM Design is an award-winning international architecture and engineering firm with 10 offices throughout the United States, including Denver, and four offices in the United Kingdom. HLM Design is best known for its design of the United States Courthouse in Sacramento, Calif., and for the Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C.

The construction manager and general contractor is Gerald H. Phipps Inc.of Denver. Gerald H. Phipps Inc. has completed more than 1,400 construction projects across Colorado and has been in business since 1952. Previously, Phipps was the contractor for the Phipps IMAX® Theater renovation at the Museum. The firm has recently worked on Invesco Field at Mile High and renovations of the Colorado Capitol, the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion at Fitzsimmons and The Children’s Hospital.

Construction began on the new atrium in April 2001 and was completed in September 2002. The next steps of renovation will focus on preparing the space for the Space Odyssey exhibition and Gates Planetarium opening in 2003.

Additional design team members and engineers include Martin/Martin Inc. (structural), Integrated Planning and Engineering (mechanical), Overload Solutions (electrical), David L. Adams (acoustics), Auerbach Associates (lighting and planetarium theater consultants.)
