Main Kit: The IMAX Experience

THE IMAX EXPERIENCE

Watching a film in the Phipps IMAX® Theater is not your typical trip to the movies—it’s an opportunity to be transported to places few of us have ever experienced. The IMAX films shown by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science always teach the audience something new about our fascinating world—whether they explore ancient civilizations, an active volcano spitting fire or the otherworldly, undersea habitat of a coral reef. Regardless of the subject, the four-and-a-half-story-tall IMAX screen fills your eye with crisp, vivid images, and the theater’s 58 speakers surround you with clear digital sound, giving you the feeling of being immersed in the action you see on screen without ever having to leave the comfort of your seat.

Theater-goers are treated to this unique cinematic experience thanks to the ingenuity of IMAX technology. The film used in the IMAX projector is four times larger than standard 35 mm movie film, so it delivers a superior picture. It also requires some special handling. A typical IMAX film is delivered on a four-foot-wide horizontal platter and weighs about 250 pounds. It takes nearly two-and-a-half miles of film for a 45-minute IMAX movie.

The Phipps IMAX Theater has been showing these large-format films since 1983. Prior to this, the space had a glorious run as Phipps Auditorium. Between 1940 and 1982, millions of people filled its seats for a wide variety of programs, from concerts and conventions, to Saturday morning nature films sponsored by the Museum. Phipps IMAX Theater seats 440 people and offers showings daily. For a current schedule and show times, visit www.dmns.org or call 303.322.7009 or 1.800.925.2250.
