PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN

Engineer It!—Boat Design and More
Grades 2–3
What is an engineer? Ever wonder how an engineer designs a building to withstand an earthquake or an airplane to fly or a boat to float? Delve into engineering with us. Explore the Engineer It! exhibition, then design and build dragon boats and more in class.
Section I: Saturday, October 14, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Section II: Saturday, December 2, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
$40 member, $50 nonmember

Engineer It! Wing’ It
Grades 4–6
Delve into engineering with us. Discover how an engineer designs an airplane to fly, then design an airplane wing like an engineer. Explore the Engineer It! exhibition and more.
Saturday, October 21, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Sunday, November 19, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOL GROUPS

Robotics Lab
Grades 4–8
Why do we use robots in space? Learn about the Mars Exploration Rover and other robots that are working in space today. Using small motors and many large and small robot components, build and engineer a robot that will perform a specific task. Describe your robot’s function to the class and have your photo taken with your invention!
Available September 29, 2006
$12 per student

Roving Mars IMAX® Film
School students will travel on a fantastic voyage to an undiscovered world of mystery and wonder—the enigmatic planet Mars. The amazing story of the Mars Rovers is told through the eyes of Steve Squyres, lead science investigator at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Squyres, while pursuing his lifelong dream of exploring Mars, found himself the driving force behind the creation and launch of the Mars rovers. Follow Squyres and a team of scientists as they work on a trip to the mystifying red planet.
September 29, 2006–Spring 2007

Engineer It! Camp-In
Grades 3–6
Delve into the science of engineering with an overnight camping adventure. Attend hands-on workshops and explore the Museum’s diverse exhibit halls including the new traveling exhibition Engineer It! Enjoy the Roving Mars IMAX and a visit to the Denver Zoo in the morning.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE LABS AT YOUR SITE

Design in Motion
Grades 3–6
Challenge your students to think outside the box as they create and test a wind-dispersed seed that they design themselves. Watch as your students gather and analyze data and see inquiry in action! Engage your classroom in the investigative nature of science and uncover the complementary nature between structure and function.

Energy at Play
Grades 3–6
Energize your students with this exploration of the way energy transforms and transfers. Students will engage in an inquiry-based discovery lab that will develop their higher order thinking skills as they design and construct a toy with its own propulsion mechanism. Your students will be analyzing, applying, synthesizing and evaluating as they are creating and having fun!

Prices vary based on location. Call 303.370.6453 for information.

TEACHER WORKSHOP

Engineer It!
Most appropriate for K–8 teachers
Introduce students to the process of experimentation and problemsolving. Use the same steps as an engineer to design and build boats, bridges, windmills and airplanes. Discover how pulleys and gears work and operate a cargo crane. Make the most of this exciting exhibition while meeting specific learning objectives about how things work. Hear from experts in the field and take resources back to school. Come have fun while you solve problems and become an engineer yourself!
Saturday, October 7, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
0.5 graduate-level, recertification credit available through the Colorado School of Mines
$55 member noncredit, $80 member Colorado School of Mines recertification credit
$60 nonmember noncredit, $85 nonmember Colorado School of Mines recertification credit
