Star of The Alps Coming to Denver Museum of Nature & Science for IMAX Film’s Premiere
John Harlin III Will Speak About Making the Groundbreaking Mountain Climbing Film
DENVER—January 2, 2008—For climbers all over the world, scaling the daunting North Face of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps is a significant accomplishment. For mountaineer and writer John Harlin III, summiting the Eiger is much more—it is a profound personal triumph over a loss that has haunted him for a lifetime.
Hear Harlin’s inspiring story when he appears at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for the opening of The Alps, the new IMAX® film about his successful ascent to the top of the mountain that claimed his father’s life. Harlin will talk about the making of the film, and his book The Eiger Obsession: Facing The Mountain That Killed My Father, on Friday, January 11, at 7 p.m. in the Museum’s Phipps IMAX Theater. Tickets are $15 for members, $18 for nonmembers and can be purchased by calling 303-322-7009 or 1-800-925-2250. Copies of Harlin’s book will be available for purchase and signing.
The Eiger is one of the world’s most celebrated peaks but also is notorious among climbers for its deadly avalanches and showers of falling rock. At the time of his death 40 years ago, Harlin’s father was a rising star in the climbing world and considered one of America’s best mountaineers. He was attempting to climb a new route straight up the Eiger’s 6,000-foot face when his rope broke and he plummeted to his death. Harlin was just nine years old when his father died.
In The Alps, Harlin faces his own inner demons and honors his father’s memory on his climb to the Eiger’s summit. Beyond chronicling Harlin’s ascent, The Alps features some of the most spectacular giant screen imagery ever seen captured by intrepid helicopter and mountaineering crews. The film celebrates both the unsurpassed beauty of the Alps and the indomitable spirit of the people who live, climb and explore there.
