Nature Unleashed
Especially for K–12th grade teachers
Earthquakes. Tornadoes. Hurricanes. Volcanic eruptions. Tsunamis. From California to Krakatoa, these immense forces of geology and weather have shaped our planet and our world. How do they affect us and how do we respond? Can we prevent them? Should we even try? Explore these questions and more in the teacher workshop supporting the immersive temporary exhibition Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters. The workshop and exhibition will include visceral experiences, compelling media, and multidisciplinary science that goes beyond the sensational headlines to explore the principles at work behind Earth’s most powerful natural phenomena. This workshop is supported in part by a grant from Agilent Technologies Foundation.

Come and be one of the first to experience Expedition Health, the new health sciences exhibition opening in April 2009. Expedition Health provides a personalized, interactive experience for students to learn about human biology with fun exhibits, lab experiments, demonstrations, and an immersive theater show. In addition to exploring the exhibition, hear a lecture from the Museum’s curator for health sciences and try out activities from the new Expedition Health Online Guide. This workshop is funded in part by a grant from the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health.

LAMP: The Search for Lunar WaterEspecially for 6th–12th grade teachers
Join Museum scientists and educators for a day of lunar exploration! The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission will conduct investigations that will prepare for and support future human exploration of the moon. LRO focuses on the selection of safe landing sites, identification of lunar resources, and studies of how the lunar radiation environment will affect humans. As part of the overall mission, the Lyman-Alpha Mapping Project (LAMP) is an instrument designed to search for lunar water at the moon’s poles. This workshop will present Museum and classroom activities designed to help students explore light, identify chemical signatures, and participate in the search for lunar water.
