Level 3 is home to the Anschutz Gallery, made possible by The Anschutz Foundation, which will adjoin the existing Phipps Special Exhibits Gallery. This allows an expansive space that will greatly enhance the Museum’s ability to present the world’s leading exhibitions. The galleries will be used together to stage one large temporary exhibition, and they will be used independently to stage two exhibitions simultaneously.
The Museum will open the new wing on February 14 with the Rocky Mountain Region premiere of the new exhibition Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed. This exhibition will be the first opportunity for the new Anschutz Gallery and the existing Phipps Special Exhibits Gallery to be used in tandem.
Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed is the largest exhibition about the ancient Maya ever to be displayed in the United States. Through a combination of never-before-seen artifacts, hands-on activities, and immersive environments—including re-creations of an underworld cave, the starry night sky, and a vibrantly colored mural room—visitors will explore the rise and eventual decline of this fascinating culture’s ancient cities. In fall 2014, the Museum will use the two galleries separately for the first time with the presentation of Whales: Giants of the Deep in Phipps Special Exhibits Gallery and Traveling the Silk Road in Anschutz Gallery.
