Poliovirus Research and Eradication: Past, Present and Future

Brian Kempf

Despite nearly sixty years of basic research and nearly 30 years of eradication efforts, poliovirus is still a public health problem. Poliovirus is still circulating in Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan with hundreds of cases annually with new outbreaks occurring annually in neighboring countries. The current eradication campaign faces scientific, financial, and social difficulties. Current research to understand how the virus functions could finally help eradicate this crippling disease. Join us for a presentation to learn more about how advances in virus genetics are helping local researchers at the University of Colorado develop a better polio vaccine.

Brian J. Kempf, PhD is a Research Associate for David J. Barton, PhD at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Microbiology.
