On Monday, we became serious about our LepNet grant. Eric Knutson started as curatorial assistant in the NSF-funded Lepidoptera of North America Network. In the next year or so, Eric and his databasing volunteers will digitize and catalogue over 20,000 butterfliies and moths, thousands will be photographed, and everything will be available on our online database SCAN. This is a further step towards online accessibility of our entomology holdings. Scientists and other butterfly and moth aficionados will be able to access a junk of our 130,000 Lepidoptera specimens freely and will find out more easily whether we have interesting material for their studies.
