Denver Museum of Nature & Science Lends Konovalenko Gem Carvings to Kremlin for Temporary Exhibition | Posted July 15 | The Denver Museum of Nature & Science recently visited Russia to lend three gem carvings from the Museum’s collection to the Kremlin for an exhibition about the Russian artist Vasily Konovalenko. Denver Museum of Nature & Science Curator Helps Discover Real Reason Why Turtles Have Shells | Posted July 14 | It is common knowledge that the modern turtle shell is largely used for protection. No other living vertebrate has so drastically altered its body to form such an impenetrable protective structure as the turtle. However, a new study by an international group of paleontologists suggests that the broad ribbed proto shell on the earliest partially shelled fossil turtles was initially an adaptation, for burrowing underground, not for protection. Paleontologist Tyler Lyson from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science is among the scientists that helped make this discovery. More...

Denver Museum of Nature & Science CT Scans of Fossilized Bubbles Give Clues to Earth’s Early Atmosphere Size  | Posted May 6 | A new process for analyzing ancient bubbles trapped in lava sheds light on the Earth’s atmosphere and its evolution over billions of years. Researchers at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, along with colleagues at the University of Washington and the University of Western Australia, used a CT scanner to analyze the size and distribution of gas bubbles within lava flows that solidified an estimated 2.7 billion years ago. Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Children's Hospital Colorado Partner to Scan Mummies | Posted April 19 | The Denver Museum of Nature & Science partnered with Children’s Hospital Colorado to scan two mummies and a sarcophagus from the Museum’s Egyptian Mummies exhibit. Children’s Colorado donated its time, expertise and equipment to allow the Museum to perform new CT scans of the mummies on April 18, getting high-resolution scans in multiple wavelengths to increase and update the scientific understanding of these items from the Museum’s collections. Denver Museum of Nature & Science Receives Google Grant for Field Trip Support | Posted January 28 | Google awarded the Denver Museum of Nature & Science a significant grant through its Field Trip Days program. It is not only the first grant of its kind for the Museum but it is the first among museums in the Rocky Mountain region. The grant will benefit 8,781 students and chaperones from 87 school districts during the 2015/2016 academic year by providing scholarships and funds for transportation. More...
