CommentsWe are working on a new temporary exhibit for the Weckbaugh case
just outside of the entrance to the Crane North American Indian
Hall. Remember the story about how we brought a 25 foot totem pole
into the building as part of a new accession in 2011? If not, check
out the link here. Several pieces from
that donation of eighteen Lelooska carvings will be installed in
the Weckbaugh case at the end of June 2012.
One of the pieces, the 8 foot by 8 foot carved wall panel you
see above, is too large to install directly into the case and so we
have taken high resolution photographs of it to include as part of
the display graphics. This piece is made up of six separate planks
of cedar which were carved and painted by the
Kwakwaka'wakw artist Lelooska in 1969. In his own words,
this is a "northern style ceremonial house screen -- carved in
relief on cedar plank. Represents the Great Raven."
If you haven't seen the "Around the World with Glass Seed Beads"
exhibit that is currently in the Weckbaugh case, stop by soon. We
will be deinstalling the beads in mid-June 2012 in preparation for
the Lelooska exhibit.
