On October 15, 2010, the National Park Service broke ground on
sorely needed new visitor and research center just off the
southeast corner of the intersection of Colorado Highway 160 and
the Mesa Verde Road. This $12,000,000 building, which is designed
to achieve U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED™) Platinum, will make the wonders of
Mesa Verde National Park accessible to visitors who do not have
time to make the 45-minute drive to the Mesa top.
Sometime either late Thursday, March 3rd, or in the early morning
hours of Friday, March 4th, a vandal or vandals fired shots at the Park's entrance
station. The bullet-proof glass on that station cracked and
will have to be replaced. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and it is
not known whether the shooting was related to the new construction
project, why would someone shoot at the entrance kiosk to a
National Park?
