Program Description:

Take Wonder to the next level!  In this course, you will see that literacy is not just “one more thing to teach” but a powerful tool to strengthen your inquiry-based instruction without sacrificing any of the excitement and deep thinking that comes from direct experiential learning. Professional scientists and social scientists unravel mysteries by creating and presenting claim-based arguments. How can we get our students excited about this type of reading, writing, and discourse every day?

The blended on-line and face-to-face coursework focuses on how your students can enrich their learning and sense-making using non-fiction text, scientific writing, graphic literacy, and productive discourse.

Have fun as you observe, practice, plan and implement research-based strategies that support all learners.


Grades: 
For practicing 5-12 grade teachers.


Dates and Times: 
Summer On-line Workshop (Synchronous)
June 22-25 & June 29-30, 2020 (9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.)
Fall Online Lesson Implementation (Asynchronous)
September 7 -October 18, 2020
Final Face-to-Face (at the Museum)
October 17, 2020 (8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.)


Cost and Credit:
COST: $175 (includes university credit, textbook,, materials, and on-line coaching for 6 weeks)

CREDIT: At the completion of all required coursework participants will receive both:

  • 2 Graduate Level University Credit Hours and
  • A Certificate for 15 hrs toward CLDE certification

NEED CLD CREDITS FOR RELICENSURE?

Note: This course fulfills several of the new English Learner Requirements for re-licensure.  In fact, one of our instructors is a district ELD coach!  At the completion of this course, a certificate for 15 of your 45 required CDE hours for Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education will be provided,

Fall On-line Lesson Implementation
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
At DMNS we believe that giving teachers the opportunity to implement new strategies while receiving feedback and support is important. But we don’t believe in creating extra work for teachers who are already overburdened.

During the six-week asynchronous implementation time,  you will do two things:

  1. Submit four lesson plans where you have integrated at least one of the strategies learned in the summer course, with a brief 2-3 paragraph reflection on how it went. (Assignment Options are posted at beginning of course and lessons can be designed during summer break if you wish.)

  2. Participate in a weekly discussion thread with your peers where you discuss with each other successes and challenges with implementation.
