Great Sand Dunes Tiger Beetle (Cicindela theatina)

Uniquely Colorado

The Great Sand Dunes Tiger Beetle is a fast ground-living predator that hunts other insects. It is a Colorado endemic, occurring only in our state, namely on the dunes of the Great Sand Dunes National Park—and only there. This specimen is a paratype, meaning it belongs to the original series of specimens from which Father Bernhard Rotger described the species as new to science in 1944.
