Denver Museum of Nature & Science Earns National Accreditation, a Distinction Held by Fewer Than 5% of U.S. Museums
DENVER, CO — April 2 — The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has again achieved accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition for museums and a distinction held by fewer than 5% of institutions nationwide. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, roughly 1,100 are currently accredited.
The designation follows a rigorous, multi-year review of the Museum’s governance, collections stewardship, financial management, education programs and public service. The process includes a comprehensive self-study and an on-site evaluation by a team of peer reviewers.
“This is one of the most demanding benchmarks in our field,” said George Sparks, President and CEO. “It validates the way we operate and reinforces the trust our community places in us every day.”
Alliance accreditation is the field’s primary benchmark for excellence and accountability, developed and sustained by museum professionals for more than 50 years.
“Accreditation is a monumental achievement,” said Marilyn Jackson, AAM President & CEO. “The process demonstrates an institution’s commitment to best practice and is flexible enough to be accomplished by museums of any size.”
The American Alliance of Museums accreditation program is widely regarded as the field’s gold standard. Fewer than 5% of museums nationwide hold this distinction. The recognition comes at a time of continued growth and transformation for the Museum, including major capital investments, new public experiences and expanded community engagement.
“This is not a finish line,” said Sparks. “It’s a commitment to keep raising the bar.”
