Denver Museum of Nature & Science President & CEO George Sparks Announces Retirement After 21 Remarkable Years

Sparks will continue to serve as president & CEO through 2026, supporting a seamless transition to the Museum’s next visionary leader

DENVER (Nov. 11, 2025) — The Denver Museum of Nature & Science announced today that George Sparks, the Museum’s president & CEO for over 21 years, will retire at the end of 2026 when the next leader has been identified. Under his visionary leadership, the Museum has grown into one of the most respected nature and science museums in the country.

Since joining the Museum in 2004, Sparks has championed a mission to inspire a passion for discovery in millions of visitors across the Colorado community and beyond.

Under George’s leadership, the Museum has become a place where science meets everyone, everywhere. He expanded the Museum’s reach beyond its walls  deepening its role as a trusted civic and scientific leader while ensuring that discovery and connection are accessible to all. From reimagined galleries and immersive learning spaces to community partnerships and outreach that meet people where they are, George has championed innovation at every turn.

He also founded the Institute for Science & Policy, a pioneering effort to connect science, policy and community dialogue on the most pressing issues of our time.

Through groundbreaking research — including the “Snowmastodon Project,” Corral Bluffs, “Teen Rex” and discoveries spanning genomics and ancient cultures — he reinforced the Museum’s dual role as both educator and investigator.

Under his guidance, the Museum welcomed more than 2 million visitors annually, expanded its impact across the region and remained a place where curiosity, discovery and belonging thrive for all.

“George’s leadership has left an indelible mark on the Denver Museum of Nature & Science,” said Jena Hausmann, Chair of the Museum's Board of Trustees. “His efforts have set the Museum on a trajectory of growth and belonging, and he has created a culture of curiosity and collaboration that has transformed this institution into a beloved community resource. We are incredibly grateful for his dedication and visionary leadership and look forward to continuing to work with him as an advisor after next year.”

The Museum’s Board of Trustees will launch a thoughtful and comprehensive national search for Sparks’ successor. The process aims to identify a leader who will build on the organization’s legacy of excellence and lead the Museum into an exciting future of growth and discovery. Sparks will remain in his role as president & CEO until his successor is selected and fully onboarded, ensuring stability and continuity throughout the transition.

“Serving as the president & CEO of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science has been the honor of a lifetime. I am endlessly proud of the incredible work we’ve done together to inspire curiosity, creativity and exploration. The Museum has always been about the people — our staff, volunteers, guests, members, donors and community. Each of you has made this place what it is today. While this is a bittersweet moment for me, I’m excited to see how the Museum continues to evolve and thrive under new leadership,” Sparks said.
