Bruce Jakosky, the principal investi gator for the Mars Atmosphere and Volati le Evolution (MAVEN) mission, will share the story behind this latest mission to Mars. Jakosky is professor of geology and based at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado-Boulder, just one of several local connecti ons for this major mission. MAVEN launched last November and is expected to begin orbiti ng Mars in September. This roboti c mission will study why and how the planet evolved from having a warm, wet, thick atmosphere long ago to having the cold, dry, very thin atmosphere observed today. Jakosky will explain how scienti sts will use MAVEN data to study whether the Red Planet could have supported life in its early history.
