We closed out a tumltuous (to say the least!) 2020 on a strong note. The Institute for Science & Policy held its second annual symposium in December, and closed out nearly a year-long collaboration with the Colorado School of Public Health that will continue into 2021 with an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. We also welcomed more guests through our doors than we had seen in several months, thanks largely to a completely redesigned “Space Odyssey” and our traveling exhibitions “Dogs! A Science Tail” and “The Art of the Brick.”

If you’re like me, you probably breathed a sigh of relief as the calendar flipped to Jan. 1, 2021. It was only a few short days, however, before we witnessed the storming of our nation’s Capitol and were again reminded of the importance of standing against systemic racism and actively working toward more equitable policies, processes and organizations.  

In my last message, I shared that we were in the process of hiring a consultant to help the Museum and its team of dedicated staff continue on its journey toward becoming a more diverse, equitable, accessible and inclusive (DEAI) organization. I am excited to share that we have hired a team of six DEAI professionals and community leaders, to walk this journey with us.  

As I reflect on the Museum’s 120 year history and the past 12 months, while I’m grateful to our many supporters and proud of our team for how we’ve handled the challenges of a global pandemic, our DEAI work is what I hope will make the difference in how your Museum works to dismantle systemic racism and serves the community. This is a long-term commitment.
