Home School Day is a flexibly structured, open-ended opportunity for home school students to explore and immerse themselves in the wondrous ways animals use their superpowers to adapt to their worlds!

Cost:  $15/students grades 3–9; $10/adults and children age 3–grade 2

Plunge into the vibrant underwater world of Earth’s mightiest animals in Whales: Giants of the Deep Temporary Exhibition.

View an IMAX show, suitable for all ages (Run Time: 45 minutes)

Science Chat: One on One with Zoology Collections, 10:30 or 11 a.m.
Did you know our Zoology Department houses more than 900,000 specimens? These include 40,000 vials of arachnids (spiders and their relatives), each vial holding anywhere from one to hundreds of animals; well over 780,000 insects with strength in the orders Coleoptera (the beetles) and Lepidoptera (the butterflies and moths); 17,000 shell lots representing shells from all over the world; 52,000 bird specimens, including a significant nest and egg collection; 14,000 specimens of mammals, including several threatened or endangered species and several species now considered extinct. Explore some of these specimens with knowledgeable Zoology staff.

Super Animal Adaptations 
(Best suited for 3rd grade and higher)

Meet nature’s “superheroes” as they discover how animals use their amazing body parts and behaviors to survive. Plus, enjoy investigation time in the Wildlife Halls with ready-to-use activities loaded onto a tablet provided by the Museum.

  • Dwell time: approximately 30 minutes, plus time in the Wildlife Halls
  • Open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Heart Chamber
(Best suited for 3rd grade and higher)
Get an inside look at the heart in this interactive dissection program. Students investigate four different educational stories: the heart is a pump, the heart is electric, the heart is a muscle, and the heart has its own blood supply.

  • Dwell time: approximately 30 minutes
  • Start times: 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 a.m.
