Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the Salisbury Plain of southern England. The fertile grasslands attracted hunter-gatherers thousands of years before Stonehenge was built.
A henge is a piece of land surrounded by a circular ditch and raised bank. The henge of Stonehenge was made 5,000 years ago. It is about as long a football field.
The original Stonehenge included a circle of nine-foot-tall bluestones. A few sarsen stones and wood structures stood inside the bluestone circle. Wood posts marked the northeast entrance.
Stonehenge was remodeled 500 years after it was first built. Larger sarsen (sandstone) stones were raised to create a new circle of uprights and horizontal lintels. Inside was a ring of bluestones and five sarsen trilithons (pairs of upright stones with lintels) that formed a horseshoe.
People from all over Britain came together to build Stonehenge. For months at a time, they lived in the builders village Durrington Walls, two miles from Stonehenge. Scientists believe at least 4,000 people lived there over a span of less than 40 years.
Almost 4,500 years ago, the Beaker People brought metalworking, the wheel, and bell-shaped pots to the area. They gradually replaced the indigenous farmers, and their technology ended the Stone Age.
Numbers in Nature
Patterns are all around us, in nature and in human designs. Can you find these patterns at the airport?
Symmetry
Two or more identical parts reflected over an axis.
Spirals
Curls showing growth patterns, often with golden ratio proportions.
Voronoi
Tight cells arranged around seed points.
Fractals
Repeating patterns of different sizes.
Tessellations
Repeating patterns without gaps.
The golden ratio
A common proportion in which a/b = a+b/a = 1.618.
