Wednesday, March 13

Boy Called Piano – the Story of Fa’amoana John Luafutu, director Nina Nawalowalo. Arriving in Aotearoa as a young child in the 1950s, Fa’amoana was taken from his family and made a ward of the state when he was only 12, suffering abuse and neglect alongside other Pacific Islander and Maori children. Through interviews and dramatizations, this powerful documentary reveals Fa’amoana’s journey through state care, prison, gang membership, the impacts of these experiences on his identity and his family, and the challenges of breaking the intergenerational cycle of incarceration. (The Conch, 2022, 57 min.).

Please join us for a post-screening discussion about prisoner rights, the power of story telling to foster change, and the challenges of breaking the inter-generational cycle of incarceration, with filmmaker Nina Nawalowalo ONZM, lead actor Matthias Luafutu, and prisoner rights activist Karen Rudolph, appearing via Zoom for a conversation and audience Q&A, moderated by Mervyn L. Tano, IIIRM.
