60 Minutes in Space – GATHERED IN DARKNESS Film & Panel Discussion

What can a few minutes of darkness reveal about our closest star?

Total solar eclipses inspire awe and wonder, but they also offer scientists a rare opportunity to study the Sun in ways that are impossible at any other time. Join us at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for special edition of 60 Minutes in Space, featuring a screening of Gathered in Darkness, a documentary following the Citizen CATE 2024 mission, an ambitious community science project that united participants across the United States during the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Working together along the eclipse path, volunteers and researchers captured more than 47,000 images of the solar corona, the Sun's faint outer atmosphere that is normally hidden by its brilliant surface. By combining observations from across the country, the project created an unprecedented record of the corona and the dynamic processes unfolding within it.

Following the film, hear from the mission's lead scientists and filmmaker as they share behind-the-scenes stories of documenting a nationwide scientific effort. They'll also offer a sneak peek at some of the data collected during the eclipse and discuss how these observations are helping researchers better understand solar storms, solar magnetism and the ways solar activity can affect life and technology here on Earth.
